Hi, I’m Heather!

I’ve always been the girl who loved the animals that were a little different. Snakes, lizards, spiders, mantises, isopods—the creatures that sometimes make other people take a step back are usually the ones that make me want to take a closer look.

I’ve been an elementary school teacher for 16 years, and my love of animals has naturally found its way into my classroom. Several of my animal ambassadors come to school with me.  I’ve seen firsthand how powerful they can be for getting kids excited about science, asking questions, and learning about animals they may have never encountered before.

I’m also a lifelong maker and crafter, and crochet has become another way I love creating and teaching. Whether I’m sharing a new skill with kids or turning yarn into a tiny animal, I love watching creativity and curiosity come together.

Scales & Stitches Learning Co. grew from two things I love: teaching children and sharing my passion for unusual animals, and creating with my hands. My goal is to give kids the chance to meet these incredible creatures up close, learn what makes them special, and maybe even discover that the animal they thought was a little creepy is actually amazing.
